Foamies

There are so many foamies on the market that it's difficult to mention all of them. Here we cover the ones we have had experience of in our club.....

NCFM Models
M60

This model is quite difficult to build but well worth the effort. It has a ballast tube for windy conditions.
It was designed as a 60'' racer. There is a smaller version called the Moth. It needs some experience to fly one of these. They go where they are pointed. A good windy day and you can't beat an M60 racer.

Moth

Here's the NCFM Moth it's brilliant to fly in all winds - it's pretty difficult to build like the M60
It's the smaller version of the M60.
It comes with a ballast tube so you can load it up for really windy conditions.

NCFM models can be bought from the following supplier - T9 Hobbysport

**** NCFM also make the Bluto, Halfbad and Halfpipe

ZAGI

The Zagi is a flying wing which is a little unstable but it does offer good performance and is a good follow-on model from the Wildthing.
The Zagi can be bought from the following supplier - T9 Hobbysport

NINJA

The Ninja is a big brother to the Zagi and performs in all wind conditions over 15 mph.
The Ninja is no longer available to purchase but there are a few in our club if you wanted to try one.

Multiplex Xeno

A clever, elegant, moustache-shaped wing that glides very smoothly while its fold-ability allows for easy transport. It's a foamy flying wing but it's not indestructible, I'd recommend adding glass tape to the leading edges and use Araldite rather than Zacki to join the foam to the hard plastic centre section. It's the hard plastic which breaks and it's not easy to fix. The major design shortcoming was Multiplex's decision to mount the control horns on the underside where they will routinely break even with a 'greaser' landing. So on my mark 2 model I took a scalpel to the foam and redirected the push rods to the top of the control surface where I glued the horns, I then realised the horns were far too short and added plywood levers – problems solved. As I say it's a very smooth flyer and it penetrates strong winds remarkably well.

The Xeno can be bought from the following supplier - Sussex Model Centre

Hobby King Ridge Ryder

This is another flying wing, this time from Hobby King. There are a number of these models in the club and they fly extremely well.
This model can be bought from the following supplier - Hobby King

Traceur

This model is a more traditional shape for a foamie glider and it has the capability to perform VTPR flying quite easily due to the massive control surface deflections and all moving tail.
An updated version of this model is still available from Modellbau Joost in Germany
